Corporate plan 2022-2023

This year, 2022-2023, marks the halfway point of our current strategy. Shifting our focus to supporting professionals on our register through the pandemic has meant we’ve not been able to progress some of the ambitions we outlined in our original strategy in 2020.

This year will be pivotal in shifting our focus back onto delivering our strategic plans. Our corporate plan for 2022-2025 sets out how we focus once again on our strategic goals, and stay committed to our values.

Annual Reports

Each year, we submit an annual report and accounts to Parliament, through the Privy Council.

Our annual report sets out our objectives, describes what we have achieved during the year and explains our governance, financial resources and future plans.

Our accounts detail our income and our spending in line with requirements laid down by the Privy Council. These say that we must comply with the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities and with any other requirements.

Our EDI Action Plan

We value the diversity of the people on our register, our employees and the people and communities we and our professionals serve.

We have a responsibility as a regulator and as an employer to do everything in our power to tackle discrimination and inequality and to promote diversity and inclusion. We’re taking action, but we have much more to do. We recognise our individual and collective responsibilities to address these issues.

To make this a reality we’ll take a phased, structured approach to business planning, operations, project planning and delivery that actively builds in EDI from the outset. This will support our overall direction, which is set by our Council and five-year strategy.

We have developed our EDI plan which sets out the steps we’re taking to include EDI in all aspects of our work.

Our Education Standards

Our new standards framework for nursing and midwifery education have been in effect since 28 January 2019. They apply to all education institutions and their practice learning partners running NMC approved programmes.

Why are our standards important?

Our standards were written to give approved education institutions and practice learning partners the flexibility to develop creative approaches to education. They also at the same time, allow institutions to still be accountable for the local delivery and management of approved programmes in line with our standards.

Our standards framework

  1. Learning culture We’ll only approve programmes where the learning culture is ethical, open and honest, and is conducive to safe and effective learning that respects the principles of equality and diversity. Innovation, inter-professional learning and team working should be embedded in the learning culture.
  2. Educational governance and quality We expect education providers to comply with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  3. Student empowerment We want students to be empowered and provided with the learning opportunities they need to achieve the desired proficiencies and programme outcomes.
  4. Educators and assessors We'll seek assurance that those who support, supervise and assess students are suitably qualified, prepared and skilled, and receive the necessary support for their role.
  5. Curricula and assessment We set standards for curricula and assessment that enable students to achieve the outcomes required to practise safely and effectively in their chosen area.
